EastofDorthonionthemarchesofBeleriandweremostopentoattack,andonlyhillsofnogreatheightguardedthevaleofGelionfromthenorth.Inthatregion,upontheMarchofMaedhrosandinthelandsbehind,dweltthesonsofFeanorwithmanypeople;andtheirriderspassedoftenoverthevastnorthernplain,Lothlannthewideandempty,eastofArd-galen,lestMorgothshouldattemptanysortietowardsBastBeleriand.ThechiefcitadelofMaedhroswasupontheHillofHimring,theEver-cold;andthatwaswide-shouldered,bareoftrees,andflatuponitssummit,surroundedbymanylesserhills.BetweenHimringandDorthoniontherewasapass,exceedingsteepuponthewest,andthatwasthePassofAglon,andwasagateuntoDoriath;andabitterwindbleweverthroughitfromthenorth.ButCelegormandCurufinfortifiedAglonandhelditwithgreatstrength,andallthelandofHimladsouthwardbetweentheRiverArosthatroseinDorthonionandhistributaryCelonthatcamefromHimring.
BetweenthearmsofGelionwasthewardofMaglor,andhereinoneplacethehillsfailedaltogether:thereitwasthattheOrcscameintoEastBeleriandbeforetheThirdBattle
