Onthewestsideofthisgorge,wheretheshortandfoamingstreamRingwiltumbledheadlongintoNarogfromtheHighFaroth,FinrodestablishedNargothrond.Butsometwenty-fiveleagueseastofthegorgeofNargothrondSirionfellfromthenorthinamightyfallbelowtheMeres,andthenheplungedsuddenlyundergroundintogreattunnelsthattheweightofhisfallingwatersdelved;andheissuedagainthreeleaguessouthwardwithgreatnoiseandsmokethroughrockyarchesatthefootofthehillswhichwerecalledtheGatesofSirion.
ThisdividingfallwasnamedAndram,theLongWall,fromNargothrondtoRamdal,theWall’sEnd,inEastBeleriand.Butintheeastitbecameeverlesssheer,forthevaleofGelionslopedsteadilysouthward,andGelionhadneitherfallnorrapidsthroughouthiscourse,butwaseverswifterthanwasSirion.BetweenRamdalandGeliontherestoodasinglehillofgreatextentandgentleslopes,butseemingmightierthanitwas,foritstoodalone;andthathillwasnamedAmonEreb.UponAmonErebdiedDenethor,lordoftheNandorthatdweltinOssiriand,whomarchedtotheaidofThingolagainstMorgothinthosedayswhentheOrcsfirstcamedowninforce,andbrokethestarlitpeaceofBeleriand;anduponthathillMaedhrosdweltafterthegreatdefeat.ButsouthoftheAndram,betweenSirionandGelion,wasawildlandoftangledforestinwhichnofolkwent,savehereandthereafewDarkElveswandering;TaurimDuinathitwasnamed,theForestbetweentheRivers.
