UponthesouthernbankofEsgalduin,whereitturnedwestwardtowardsSirion,weretheCavesofMenegroth;andallDoriathlayeastofSirionsaveforanarrowregionofwoodlandbetweenthemeetingofTeiglinandSirionandtheMeresofTwilight.BythepeopleofDoriaththiswoodwascalledNivrim,theWestMarch;greatoaktreesgrewthere,anditalsowasencompassedwithintheGirdleofMelian,thatsosomeportionofSirionwhichshelovedinreverenceofUlmoshouldbewhollyunderthepowerofThingol.
Inthesouth-westofDoriath,whereArosflowedintoSirion,laygreatpoolsandmarshesoneithersideoftheriver,whichhaltedthereinhiscourseandstrayedinmanychannels.ThatregionwasnamedAelin-uial,theTwilightMeres,fortheywerewrappedinmists,andtheenchantmentofDoriathlayoverthem.NowallthenorthernpartofBeleriandslopedsouthwardtothispointandthenforawhilewasplain,andthefloodofSirionwasstayed.ButsouthofAelin-uialthelandfellsuddenlyandsteeply;andallthelowerfieldsofSirionweredividedfromtheupperfieldsbythisfall,whichtoonelookingfromthesouthnorthwardappearedasanendlesschainofhillsrunningfromEglarestbeyondNaroginthewesttoAmonErebintheeast,withinfarsightofGelion.Narogcamethroughthesehillsinadeepgorge,andflowedoverrapidsbathadnofall,andonitswesternbankthelandroseintothegreatwoodedhighlandsofTauren-Faroth.
