ThatregionwasnamedthereaftertheMarchofMaedhros;fornorthwardstherewaslittledefenceofhillorriveragainstassaultfromAngband.ThereMaedhrosandhisbrotherskeptwatch,gatheringallsuchpeopleaswouldcometothem,andtheyhadfewdealingswiththeirkinsfolkwestward,saveatneed.ItissaidindeedthatMaedhroshimselfdevisedthisplan,tolessenthechancesofstrife,andbecausehewasverywillingthatthechiefperilofassaultshouldfalluponhimself;andheremainedforhispartinfriendshipwiththehousesofFingolfinandFinarfin,andwouldcomeamongthemattimesforcommoncounsel.Yethealsowasboundbytheoath,thoughitsleptnowforatime.
NowthepeopleofCaranthirdweltfurthesteastbeyondtheupperwatersofGelion,aboutLakeHelevornunderMountRerirandtothesouthward;andtheyclimbedtheheightsofEredLuinandlookedeastwardinwonder,forwildandwideitseemedtothemwerethelandsofMiddle-earth.AndthusitwasthatCaranthir’speoplecameupontheDwarves,whoaftertheonslaughtofMorgothandthecomingoftheNoldorhadceasedtheirtrafficintoBeleriand.Butthougheitherpeoplelovedskillandwereeagertolearn,nogreatlovewastherebetweenthem;fortheDwarvesweresecretandquicktoresentment,andCaranthirwashaughtyandscarceconcealedhisscornfortheunlovelinessoftheNaugrim,andhispeoplefollowedtheirlord.
