           Thechaplain’swifewastheonethingintheworldhecouldbecertainof,anditwouldhavebeensufficient,ifonlyhehadbeenlefttolivehislifeoutwithjustherandthechildren.Thechaplain’swifewasareserved,diminutive,agreeablewomaninherearlythirties,verydarkandveryattractive,withanarrowwaist,calmintelligenteyes,andsmall,bright,pointyteethinachildlikefacethatwasvivaciousandpetite;hekeptforgettingwhathischildrenlookedlike,andeachtimehereturnedtotheirsnapshotsitwaslikeseeingtheirfacesforthefirsttime.Thechaplainlovedhiswifeandchildrenwithsuchtamelessintensitythatheoftenwantedtosinktothegroundhelplesslyandweeplikeacastawaycripple.
