           HewouldpassthetimeatYossarian’sandDunbar’stablewithashy,reticentsmile,seldomspeakingunlessaddressed,aglassofthicksweetwinealmostuntastedbeforehimashetoyedunfamiliarlywiththetinycorncobpipethatheaffectedselfconsciouslyandoccasionallystuffedwithtobaccoandsmoked.HeenjoyedlisteningtoNately,whosemaudlin,bittersweetlamentationsmirroredmuchofhisownromanticdesolationandneverfailedtoevokeinhimresurgenttidesoflongingforhiswifeandchildren.ThechaplainwouldencourageNatelywithnodsofcomprehensionorassent,amusedbyhiscandorandimmaturity.Natelydidnotglorytooimmodestlythathisgirlwasaprostitute,andthechaplain’sawarenessstemmedmainlyfromCaptainBlack,whoneverslouchedpasttheirtablewithoutabroadwinkatthechaplainandsometasteless,woundinggibeabouthertoNately.ThechaplaindidnotapproveofCaptainBlackandfounditdifficultnottowishhimevil.

           Noone,notevenNately,seemedreallytoappreciatethathe,ChaplainRobertOliverShipman,wasnotjustachaplainbutahumanbeing,thathecouldhaveacharming,passionate,prettywifewhomhelovedalmostinsanelyandthreesmallblue-eyedchildrenwithstrange,forgottenfaceswhowouldgrowupsomedaytoregardhimasafreakandwhomightneverforgivehimforallthesocialembarrassmenthisvocationwouldcausethem.
