           Peoplewithloudvoicesfrightenedhim.Brave,aggressivemenofactionlikeColonelCathcartlefthimfeelinghelplessandalone.WhereverhewentintheArmy,hewasastranger.Enlistedmenandofficersdidnotconductthemselveswithhimastheyconductedthemselveswithotherenlistedmenandofficers,andevenotherchaplainswerenotasfriendlytowardhimastheyweretowardeachother.Inaworldinwhichsuccesswastheonlyvirtue,hehadresignedhimselftofailure.Hewaspainfullyawarethathelackedtheecclesiasticalaplombandsavoir-fairethatenabledsomanyofhiscolleaguesinotherfaithsandsectstogetahead.Hewasjustnotequippedtoexcel.Hethoughtofhimselfasuglyandwanteddailytobehomewithhiswife.

           Actually,thechaplainwasalmostgood-looking,withapleasant,sensitivefaceaspaleandbrittleassandstone.Hismindwasopenoneverysubject.

           PerhapshereallywasWashingtonIrving,andperhapshereallyhadbeensigningWashingtonIrving’snametothoselettersheknewnothingabout.Suchlapsesofmemorywerenotuncommoninmedicalannals,heknew.Therewasnowayofreallyknowinganything.
