           InawaytheC.I.D.manwasprettylucky,becauseoutsidethehospitalthewarwasstillgoingon.Menwentmadandwererewardedwithmedals.Allovertheworld,boysoneverysideofthebomblinewerelayingdowntheirlivesforwhattheyhadbeentoldwastheircountry,andnooneseemedtomind,leastofalltheboyswhowerelayingdowntheiryounglives.Therewasnoendinsight.TheonlyendinsightwasYossarian’sown,andhemighthaveremainedinthehospitaluntildoomsdayhaditnotbeenforthatpatrioticTexanwithhisinfundibuliformjowlsandhislumpy,rumpleheaded,indestructiblesmilecrackedforeveracrossthefrontofhisfacelikethebrimofablacktengallonhat.TheTexanwantedeverybodyinthewardtobehappybutYossarianandDunbar.Hewasreallyverysick.

           ButYossariancouldn’tbehappy,eventhoughtheTexandidn’twanthimtobe,becauseoutsidethehospitaltherewasstillnothingfunnygoingon.Theonlythinggoingonwasawar,andnooneseemedtonoticebutYossarianandDunbar.AndwhenYossariantriedtoremindpeople,theydrewawayfromhimandthoughthewascrazy.EvenClevinger,whoshouldhaveknownbetterbutdidn’t,hadtoldhimhewascrazythelasttimetheyhadseeneachother,whichwasjustbeforeYossarianhadfledintothehospital.

           Clevingerhadstaredathimwithapoplecticrageandindignationand,clawingthetablewithbothhands,hadshouted,"You’recrazy!"

           "Clevinger,whatdoyouwantfrompeople?"Dunbarhadrepliedwearilyabovethenoisesoftheofficers’club.
