Woodcourtdinedwithustocelebratemydarling’sbirthday,andwewereaspleasantaswecouldbewiththegreatblankamongusthatRichard’sabsencenaturallymadeonsuchanoccasion.AfterthatdayIwasforsomeweeks—eightornineasIremember—verymuchwithCaddy,andthusitfelloutthatIsawlessofAdaatthistimethananyothersincewehadfirstcometogether,exceptthetimeofmyownillness.SheoftencametoCaddy’s,butourfunctiontherewastoamuseandcheerher,andwedidnottalkinourusualconfidentialmanner.WheneverIwenthomeatnightweweretogether,butCaddy’srestwasbrokenbypain,andIoftenremainedtonurseher.Withherhusbandandherpoorlittlemiteofababytoloveandtheirhometostrivefor,whatagoodcreatureCaddywas!Soself-denying,souncomplaining,soanxioustogetwellontheiraccount,soafraidofgivingtrouble,andsothoughtfuloftheunassistedlaboursofherhusbandandthecomfortsofoldMr.Turveydrop;Ihadneverknownthebestofheruntilnow.Anditseemedsocuriousthatherpalefaceandhelplessfigureshouldbelyingtheredayafterdaywheredancingwasthebusinessoflife,wherethekitandtheapprenticesbeganearlyeverymorningintheball-room,andwheretheuntidylittleboywaltzedbyhimselfinthekitchenalltheafternoon.
