           RichardveryoftencametoseeuswhileweremainedinLondon(thoughhesoonfailedinhisletter-writing),andwithhisquickabilities,hisgoodspirits,hisgoodtemper,hisgaietyandfreshness,wasalwaysdelightful.ButthoughIlikedhimmoreandmorethebetterIknewhim,Istillfeltmoreandmorehowmuchitwastoberegrettedthathehadbeeneducatedinnohabitsofapplicationandconcentration.Thesystemwhichhadaddressedhiminexactlythesamemannerasithadaddressedhundredsofotherboys,allvaryingincharacterandcapacity,hadenabledhimtodashthroughhistasks,alwayswithfaircreditandoftenwithdistinction,butinafitful,dazzlingwaythathadconfirmedhisrelianceonthoseveryqualitiesinhimselfwhichithadbeenmostdesirabletodirectandtrain.Theyweregoodqualities,withoutwhichnohighplacecanbemeritoriouslywon,butlikefireandwater,thoughexcellentservants,theywereverybadmasters.IftheyhadbeenunderRichard’sdirection,theywouldhavebeenhisfriends;butRichardbeingundertheirdirection,theybecamehisenemies.IwritedowntheseopinionsnotbecauseIbelievethatthisoranyotherthingwassobecauseIthoughtso,butonlybecauseIdidthinksoandIwanttobequitecandidaboutallIthoughtanddid.TheseweremythoughtsaboutRichard.IthoughtIoftenobservedbesideshowrightmyguardianwasinwhathehadsaid,andthattheuncertaintiesanddelaysoftheChancerysuithadimpartedtohisnaturesomethingofthecarelessspiritofagamesterwhofeltthathewaspartofagreatgamingsystem.Mr.andMrs.
