Ibeganwithmyovershadowedchildhood,andpassedthroughthosetimiddaystotheheavytimewhenmyauntlaydead,withherresolutefacesocoldandset,andwhenIwasmoresolitarywithMrs.RachaelthanifIhadhadnooneintheworldtospeaktoortolookat.IpassedtothealtereddayswhenIwassoblestastofindfriendsinallaroundme,andtobebeloved.IcametothetimewhenIfirstsawmydeargirlandwasreceivedintothatsisterlyaffectionwhichwasthegraceandbeautyofmylife.Irecalledthefirstbrightgleamofwelcomewhichhadshoneoutofthoseverywindowsuponourexpectantfacesonthatcoldbrightnight,andwhichhadneverpaled.Ilivedmyhappylifethereoveragain,Iwentthroughmyillnessandrecovery,Ithoughtofmyselfsoalteredandofthosearoundmesounchanged;andallthishappinessshonelikealightfromonecentralfigure,representedbeforemebytheletteronthetable.Iopeneditandreadit.Itwassoimpressiveinitsloveforme,andintheunselfishcautionitgaveme,andtheconsiderationitshowedformeineveryword,thatmyeyesweretoooftenblindedtoreadmuchatatime.ButIreaditthroughthreetimesbeforeIlaiditdown.IhadthoughtbeforehandthatIknewitspurport,andIdid.Itaskedme,wouldIbethemistressofBleakHouse.Itwasnotaloveletter,thoughitexpressedsomuchlove,butwaswrittenjustashewouldatanytimehavespokentome.Isawhisface,andheardhisvoice,andfelttheinfluenceofhiskindprotectingmannerineveryline.
