           Hevingbeencondemned,bynatureandfortune,toactiveandrestlesslife,intwomonthsaftermyreturn,Iagainleftmynativecountry,andtookshippingintheDowns,onthe20thdayofJune,1702,intheAdventure,CaptainJohnNicholas,aCornishman,commander,boundforSurat.Wehadaveryprosperousgale,tillwearrivedattheCapeofGoodHope,wherewelandedforfreshwater;butdiscoveringaleak,weunshippedourgoodsandwinteredthere;forthecaptainfallingsickofanague,wecouldnotleavetheCapetilltheendofMarch.Wethensetsail,andhadagoodvoyagetillwepassedtheStraitsofMadagascar;buthavinggotnorthwardofthatisland,andtoaboutfivedegreessouthlatitude,thewinds,whichinthoseseasareobservedtoblowaconstantequalgalebetweenthenorthandwest,fromthebeginningofDecembertothebeginningofMay,onthe19thofAprilbegantoblowwithmuchgreaterviolence,andmorewesterlythanusual,continuingsofortwentydaystogether:duringwhichtime,weweredrivenalittletotheeastoftheMoluccaIslands,andaboutthreedegreesnorthwardoftheline,asourcaptainfoundbyanobservationhetookthe2ndofMay,atwhichtimethewindceased,anditwasaperfectcalm,whereatIwasnotalittlerejoiced.Buthe,beingamanwellexperiencedinthenavigationofthoseseas,bidusallprepareagainstastorm,whichaccordinglyhappenedthedayfollowing:forthesouthernwind,calledthesouthernmonsoon,begantosetin.

           Findingitwaslikelytooverblow,wetookinoursprit-sail,andstoodbytohandthefore-sail;butmakingfoulweather,welookedthegunswereallfast,andhandedthemizen.Theshiplayverybroadoff,sowethoughtitbetterspooningbeforethesea,thantryingorhulling.
