ThereadermaybedisposedtowonderhowIcouldprevailonmyselftogivesofreearepresentationofmyownspecies,amongaraceofmortalswhoarealreadytooapttoconceivethevilestopinionofhumankind,fromthatentirecongruitybetweenmeandtheirYahoos.ButImustfreelyconfess,thatthemanyvirtuesofthoseexcellentquadrupeds,placedinoppositeviewtohumancorruptions,hadsofaropenedmyeyesandenlargedmyunderstanding,thatIbegantoviewtheactionsandpassionsofmaninaverydifferentlight,andtothinkthehonourofmyownkindnotworthmanaging;which,besides,itwasimpossibleformetodo,beforeapersonofsoacuteajudgmentasmymaster,whodailyconvincedmeofathousandfaultsinmyself,whereofIhadnottheleastperceptionbefore,andwhich,withus,wouldneverbenumberedevenamonghumaninfirmities.Ihadlikewiselearned,fromhisexample,anutterdetestationofallfalsehoodordisguise;andtruthappearedsoamiabletome,thatIdetermineduponsacrificingeverythingtoit.
LetmedealsocandidlywiththereaderastoconfessthattherewasyetamuchstrongermotiveforthefreedomItookinmyrepresentationofthings.IhadnotyetbeenayearinthiscountrybeforeIcontractedsuchaloveandvenerationfortheinhabitants,thatIenteredonafirmresolutionnevertoreturntohumankind,buttopasstherestofmylifeamongtheseadmirableHouyhnhnms,inthecontemplationandpracticeofeveryvirtue,whereIcouldhavenoexampleorincitementtovice.
