AlthoughIcannotsaythatIwasilltreatedinthisisland,yetImustconfessIthoughtmyselftoomuchneglected,notwithoutsomedegreeofcontempt;forneitherprincenorpeopleappearedtobecuriousinanypartofknowledge,exceptmathematicsandmusic,whereinIwasfartheirinferior,anduponthataccountverylittleregarded.
Ontheotherside,afterhavingseenallthecuriositiesoftheisland,Iwasverydesiroustoleaveit,beingheartilywearyofthosepeople.TheywereindeedexcellentintwosciencesforwhichIhavegreatesteem,andwhereinIamnotunversed;but,atthesametime,soabstractedandinvolvedinspeculation,thatInevermetwithsuchdisagreeablecompanions.Iconversedonlywithwomen,tradesmen,flappers,andcourt-pages,duringtwomonthsofmyabodethere;bywhich,atlast,Irenderedmyselfextremelycontemptible;yettheseweretheonlypeoplefromwhomIcouldeverreceiveareasonableanswer.
Ihadobtained,byhardstudy,agooddegreeofknowledgeintheirlanguage:IwaswearyofbeingconfinedtoanislandwhereIreceivedsolittlecountenance,andresolvedtoleaveitwiththefirstopportunity.
Therewasagreatlordatcourt,nearlyrelatedtotheking,andforthatreasonaloneusedwithrespect.Hewasuniversallyreckonedthemostignorantandstupidpersonamongthem.
