           Wereefedthefore-sailandsethim,andhauledaftthefore-sheet;thehelmwasharda-weather.Theshipworebravely.Webelayedtheforedown-haul;butthesailwassplit,andwehauleddowntheyard,andgotthesailintotheship,andunboundallthethingsclearofit.Itwasaveryfiercestorm;theseabrokestrangeanddangerous.Wehauledoffuponthelaniardofthewhip-staff,andhelpedthemanatthehelm.Wewouldnotgetdownourtopmast,butletallstand,becauseshescuddedbeforetheseaverywell,andweknewthatthetop-mastbeingaloft,theshipwasthewholesomer,andmadebetterwaythroughthesea,seeingwehadsea-room.Whenthestormwasover,wesetfore-sailandmain-sail,andbroughttheshipto.Thenwesetthemizen,main-top-sail,andthefore-top-sail.Ourcoursewaseast-north-east,thewindwasatsouth-west.Wegotthestarboardtacksaboard,wecastoffourweather-bracesandlifts;wesetinthelee-braces,andhauledforwardbytheweather-bowlings,andhauledthemtight,andbelayedthem,andhauledoverthemizentacktowindward,andkeptherfullandbyasnearasshewouldlie.

           Duringthisstorm,whichwasfollowedbyastrongwindwest-south-west,wewerecarried,bymycomputation,aboutfivehundredleaguestotheeast,sothattheoldestsailoronboardcouldnottellinwhatpartoftheworldwewere.Ourprovisionsheldoutwell,ourshipwasstaunch,andourcrewallingoodhealth;butwelayintheutmostdistressforwater.Wethoughtitbesttoholdonthesamecourse,ratherthanturnmorenortherly,whichmighthavebroughtustothenorth-westpartofGreatTartary,andintotheFrozenSea.

           Onthe16thdayofJune,1703,aboyonthetop-mastdiscoveredland.Onthe17th,wecameinfullviewofagreatisland,orcontinent(forweknewnotwhether;)onthesouthsidewhereofwasasmallneckoflandjuttingoutintothesea,andacreektooshallowtoholdashipofaboveonehundredtons.
