           Ithoughtthisaccountofthestruldbrugsmightbesomeentertainmenttothereader,becauseitseemstobealittleoutofthecommonway;atleastIdonotremembertohavemetthelikeinanybookoftravelsthathascometomyhands:andifIamdeceived,myexcusemustbe,thatitisnecessaryfortravellerswhodescribethesamecountry,veryoftentoagreeindwellingonthesameparticulars,withoutdeservingthecensureofhavingborrowedortranscribedfromthosewhowrotebeforethem.

           ThereisindeedaperpetualcommercebetweenthiskingdomandthegreatempireofJapan;anditisveryprobable,thattheJapaneseauthorsmayhavegivensomeaccountofthestruldbrugs;butmystayinJapanwassoshort,andIwassoentirelyastrangertothelanguage,thatIwasnotqualifiedtomakeanyinquiries.ButIhopetheDutch,uponthisnotice,willbecuriousandableenoughtosupplymydefects.

           Hismajestyhavingoftenpressedmetoacceptsomeemploymentinhiscourt,andfindingmeabsolutelydeterminedtoreturntomynativecountry,waspleasedtogivemehislicensetodepart;andhonouredmewithaletterofrecommendation,underhisownhand,totheEmperorofJapan.Helikewisepresentedmewithfourhundredandforty-fourlargepiecesofgold(thisnationdelightinginevennumbers),andareddiamond,whichIsoldinEnglandforelevenhundredpounds.

           Onthe6thofMay,1709,Itookasolemnleaveofhismajesty,andallmyfriends.
