Thereaderwilleasilybelieve,thatfromwhatIhadhearandseen,mykeenappetiteforperpetuityoflifewasmuchabated.IgrewheartilyashamedofthepleasingvisionsIhadformed;andthoughtnotyrantcouldinventadeathintowhichIwouldnotrunwithpleasure,fromsuchalife.Thekingheardofallthathadpassedbetweenmeandmyfriendsuponthisoccasion,andralliedmeverypleasantly;wishingIcouldsendacoupleofstruldbrugstomyowncountry,toarmourpeopleagainstthefearofdeath;butthis,itseems,isforbiddenbythefundamentallawsofthekingdom,orelseIshouldhavebeenwellcontentwiththetroubleandexpenseoftransportingthem.
Icouldnotbutagree,thatthelawsofthiskingdomrelativetothestruldbrugswerefoundeduponthestrongestreasons,andsuchasanyothercountrywouldbeunderthenecessityofenacting,inthelikecircumstances.Otherwise,asavariceisthenecessaryconsequenceofoldage,thoseimmortalswouldintimebecomeproprietorsofthewholenation,andengrossthecivilpower,which,forwantofabilitiestomanage,mustendintheruinofthepublic.
