Butsomethoughtfulpersons,whohadseenhimwalkingacrossoneofhisfieldsonacertainDecembermorning—sunnyandexceedinglymild—mighthaveregardedGabrielOakinotheraspectsthanthese.Inhisfaceonemightnoticethatmanyofthehuesandcurvesofyouthhadtarriedontomanhood:thereevenremainedinhisremotercranniessomerelicsoftheboy.Hisheightandbreadthwouldhavebeensufficienttomakehispresenceimposing,hadtheybeenexhibitedwithdueconsideration.Butthereisawaysomemenhave,ruralandurbanalike,forwhichthemindismoreresponsiblethanfleshandsinew:itisawayofcurtailingtheirdimensionsbytheirmannerofshowingthem.Andfromaquietmodestythatwouldhavebecomeavestal,whichseemedcontinuallytoimpressuponhimthathehadnogreatclaimontheworld’sroom,Oakwalkedunassuminglyandwithafaintlyperceptiblebend,yetdistinctfromabowingoftheshoulders.Thismaybesaidtobeadefectinanindividualifhedependsforhisvaluationmoreuponhisappearancethanuponhiscapacitytowearwell,whichOakdidnot.
