           Theafternoondrewonapace,and,lookingtotherighttowardstheseaashewalkedbesidethehorse,Poorgrasssawstrangecloudsandscrollsofmistrollingoverthelongridgeswhichgirtthelandscapeinthatquarter.Theycameinyetgreatervolumes,andindolentlycreptacrosstheinterveningvalleys,andaroundthewitheredpaperyflagsofthemoorandriverbrinks.Thentheirdankspongyformsclosedinuponthesky.Itwasasuddenovergrowthofatmosphericfungiwhichhadtheirrootsintheneighbouringsea,andbythetimethathorse,man,andcorpseenteredYalburyGreatWood,thesesilentworkingsofaninvisiblehandhadreachedthem,andtheywerecompletelyenveloped,thisbeingthefirstarrivaloftheautumnfogs,andthefirstfogoftheseries.

           Theairwasasaneyesuddenlystruckblind.
