           Shefeltwretchedlycertainthatifherevisitedherjustatthisnickoftime,andcameintocontactwithBoldwood,afiercequarrelwouldbetheconsequence.ShepantedwithsolicitudewhenshethoughtofpossibleinjurytoTroy.Theleastsparkwouldkindlethefarmer’sswiftfeelingsofrageandjealousy;hewouldlosehisself-masteryashehadthisevening;Troy’sblithenessmightbecomeaggressive;itmighttakethedirectionofderision,andBoldwood’sangermightthentakethedirectionofrevenge.

           Withalmostamorbiddreadofbeingthoughtagushinggirl,thisguilelesswomantoowellconcealedfromtheworldunderamannerofcarelessnessthewarmdepthsofherstrongemotions.Butnowtherewasnoreserve
