JanCoggan,themaster-shearer;thesecondandthirdshearers,whotravelledintheexerciseoftheircalling,anddonotrequiredefinitionbyname;HeneryFraythefourthshearer,SusanTall’shusbandthefifth,JosephPoorgrassthesixth,youngCainBallasassistant-shearer,andGabrielOakasgeneralsupervisor.Noneofthesewereclothedtoanyextentworthmentioning,eachappearingtohavehitinthematterofraimentthedecentmeanbetweenahighandlowcasteHindoo.Anangularityoflineament,andafixityoffacialmachineryingeneral,proclaimedthatseriousworkwastheorderoftheday.
Theyshearedinthegreatbarn,calledforthenoncetheShearing-barn,whichonground-planresembledachurchwithtransepts.Itnotonlyemulatedtheformoftheneighbouringchurchoftheparish,butviedwithitinantiquity.Whetherthebarnhadeverformedoneofagroupofconventualbuildingsnobodyseemedtobeaware;notraceofsuchsurroundingsremained.Thevastporchesatthesides,loftyenoughtoadmitawaggonladentoitshighestwithcorninthesheaf,werespannedbyheavy-pointedarchesofstone,broadlyandboldlycut,whoseverysimplicitywastheoriginofagrandeurnotapparentinerectionswheremoreornamenthasbeenattempted.Thedusky,filmed,chestnutroof,bracedandtiedinbyhugecollars,curves,anddiagonals,wasfarnoblerindesign,becausemorewealthyinmaterial,thannine-tenthsofthoseinourmodernchurches.
