XVIII. Boldwood in Meditation—Regret

           Hesawnoabsurdsidestothefolliesoflife,andthus,thoughnotquitecompanionableintheeyesofmerrymenandscoffers,andthosetowhomallthingsshowlifeasajest,hewasnotintolerabletotheearnestandthoseacquaintedwithgrief.Beingamanwhoreadallthedramasoflifeseriously,ifhefailedtopleasewhentheywerecomedies,therewasnofrivoloustreatmenttoreproachhimforwhentheychancedtoendtragically.

           Bathshebawasfarfromdreamingthatthedarkandsilentshapeuponwhichshehadsocarelesslythrownaseedwasahotbedoftropicintensity.HadsheknownBoldwood’smoods,herblamewouldhavebeenfearful,andthestainuponherheartineradicable.Moreover,hadsheknownherpresentpowerforgoodoreviloverthisman,shewouldhavetrembledatherresponsibility.Luckilyforherpresent,unluckilyforherfuturetranquillity,herunderstandinghadnotyettoldherwhatBoldwoodwas.Nobodyknewentirely;forthoughitwaspossibletoformguessesconcerninghiswildcapabilitiesfromoldfloodmarksfaintlyvisible,hehadneverbeenseenatthehightideswhichcausedthem.

           FarmerBoldwoodcametothestable-doorandlookedforthacrossthelevelfields.Beyondthefirstenclosurewasahedge,andontheothersideofthisameadowbelongingtoBathsheba’sfarm.

           Itwasnowearlyspringthetimeofgoingtograsswiththesheep,whentheyhavethefirstfeedofthemeadows,beforethesearelaidupformowing.Thewind,whichhadbeenblowingeastforseveralweeks,hadveeredtothesouthward,andthemiddleofspringhadcomeabruptlyalmostwithoutabeginning.
