TheseYavannatook;andthentheTreesdied,andtheirlifelessstemsstandyetinValinor,amemorialofvanishedjoy.ButtheflowerandthefruitYavannagavetoAule,andManwehallowedthem,andAuleandhispeoplemadevesselstoholdthemandpreservetheirradiance:asissaidintheNarsilion,theSongoftheSunandMoon.ThesevesselstheValargavetoVarda,thattheymightbecomelampsofheaven,outshiningtheancientstars,beingnearertoArda;andshegavethempowertotraversethelowerregionsofIlmen,andsetthemtovoyageuponappointedcoursesabovethegirdleoftheEarthfromtheWestuntotheEastandtoreturn.
ThesethingstheValardid,recallingintheirtwilightthedarknessofthelandsofArda;andtheyresolvednowtoillumineMiddle-earthandwithlighttohinderthedeedsofMelkor.FortheyrememberedtheAvarithatremainedbythewatersoftheirawakening,andtheydidnotutterlyforsaketheNoldorinexile;andManweknewalsothatthehourofthecomingofMenwasdrawnnigh.Anditissaidindeedthat,evenastheValarmadewaruponMelkorforthesakeoftheQuendi,sonowforthattimetheyforboreforthesakeoftheHildor,theAftercomers,theyoungerChildrenofIluvatar.ForsogrievoushadbeenthehurtsofMiddle-earthinthewaruponUtumnothattheValarfearedlestevenworseshouldnowbefall;whereastheHildorshouldbemortal,andweakerthantheQuenditowithstandfearandtumult.
