ThusspokeMaedhrosandMaglorandCelegorm,CurufinandCaranthir,AmrodandAmras,princesoftheNoldor;andmanyquailedtohearthedreadwords.Forsosworn,goodorevil,anoathmaynotbebroken,anditshallpursueoathkeeperandoathbreakertotheworld’send.FingolfinandTurgonhissonthereforespokeagainstFeanor,andfiercewordsawoke,sothatonceagainwrathcameneartotheedgeofswords.ButFinarfinspokesoftly,aswashiswont,andsoughttocalmtheNoldor,persuadingthemtopauseandpondereredeedsweredonethatcouldnotbeundone;andOrodreth,aloneofhissons,spokeinlikemanner.FinrodwaswithTurgon,hisfriend;butGaladriel,theonlywomanoftheNoldortostandthatdaytallandvaliantamongthecontendingprinces,waseagertobegone.Nooathssheswore,butthewordsofFeanorconcerningMiddle-earthhadkindledinherheart,forsheyearnedtoseethewideunguardedlandsandtoruletherearealmatherownwill.OflikemindwithGaladrielwasFingonFingolfin’sson,beingmovedalsobyFeanor’swords,thoughhelovedhimlittle;andwithFingonstoodastheyeverdidAngrodandAegnor,sonsofFinarfin.Buttheseheldtheirpeaceandspokenotagainsttheirfathers.
AtlengthafterlongdebateFeanorprevailed,andthegreaterpartoftheNoldorthereassembledhesetaflamewiththedesireofnewthingsandstrangecountries.ThereforewhenFinarfinspokeyetagainforheedanddelay,agreatshoutwentup:’Nay,letusbegone!’AndstraightwayFeanorandhissonsbegantoprepareforthemarchingforth.
Littleforesightcouldtherebeforthosewhodaredtotakesodarkaroad.Yetallwasdoneinover-haste;forFeanordrovethemon,fearinglestinthecoolingoftheirheartshiswordsshouldwaneandothercounselsyetprevail;andforallhisproudwordshedidnotforgetthepoweroftheValar.ButfromValmarnomessagecame,andManwewassilent.
