ItistoldthatevenasFeanorandFingolfinstoodbeforeManwetherecametheminglingofthelights,whenbothTreeswereshining,andthesilentcityofValmarwasfilledwitharadianceofsilverandgold.AndinthatveryhourMelkorandUngoliantcamehasteningoverthefieldsofValinor,astheshadowofablackclouduponthewindfleetsoverthesunlitearth;andtheycamebeforethegreenmoundEzellohar.ThentheUnlightofUngoliantroseupeventotherootsoftheTrees,andMelkorspranguponthemound;andwithhisblackspearhesmoteeachTreetoitscore,woundedthemdeep,andtheirsappouredforthasitweretheirblood,andwasspilledupontheground.ButUngoliantsuckeditup,andgoingthenfromTreetoTreeshesetherblackbeaktotheirwounds,tilltheyweredrained;andthepoisonofDeaththatwasinherwentintotheirtissuesandwitheredthem,root,branch,andleaf;andtheydied.Andstillshethirsted,andgoingtotheWellsofVardashedrankthemdry;butUngoliantbelchedforthblackvapoursasshedrank,andswelledtoashapesovastandhideousthatMelkorwasafraid.
SothegreatdarknessfelluponValinor.OfthedeedsofthatdaymuchistoldintheAldudenie,thatElemmireoftheVanyarmadeandisknowntoalltheEldar.Yetnosongortalecouldcontainallthegriefandterrorthatthenbefell.
TheLightfailed;buttheDarknessthatfollowedwasmorethanlossoflight.InthathourwasmadeaDarknessthatseemednotlackbutathingwithbeingofitsown:foritwasindeedmadebymaliceoutofLight,andithadpowertopiercetheeye,andtoenterheartandmind,andstrangletheverywill.
