NowtheElvesmademanyrings;butsecretlySauronmadeOneRingtorulealltheothers,andtheirpowerwasboundupwithit,tobesubjectwhollytoitandtolastonlysolongasittooshouldlast.AndmuchofthestrengthandwillofSauronpassedintothatOneRing;forthepoweroftheElven-ringswasverygreat,andthatwhichshouldgovernthemmustbeathingofsurpassingpotency;andSauronforgeditintheMountainofFireintheLandofShadow.AndwhileheworetheOneRinghecouldperceiveallthethingsthatweredonebymeansofthelesserrings,andhecouldseeandgoverntheverythoughtsofthosethatworethem.
ButtheElveswerenotsolightlytobecaught.AssoonasSauronsettheOneRinguponhisfingertheywereawareofhim;andtheyknewhim,andperceivedthathewouldbemasterofthem,andofanthattheywrought.Theninangerandfeartheytookofftheirrings.Buthe,findingthathewasbetrayedandthattheElveswerenotdeceived,wasfilledwithwrath;andhecameagainstthemwithopenwar,demandingthatalltheringsshouldbedeliveredtohim,sincetheElven-smithscouldnothaveattainedtotheirmakingwithouthisloreandcounsel.ButtheElvesfledfromhim;andthreeoftheirringstheysaved,andborethemaway,andhidthem.
NowtheseweretheThreethathadlastbeenmade,andtheypossessedthegreatestpowers.
