AndtheyreveredthememoryofthetallSea-kings,andwhentheyhaddepartedtheycalledthemgods,hopingfortheirreturn;foratthattimetheNumenoreansdweltneverlonginMiddle-earth,normadethereasyetanyhabitationoftheirown.
Eastwardtheymustsail,buteverwesttheirheartsreturned.
Nowthisyearninggrewevergreaterwiththeyears;andtheNumenoreansbegantohungerfortheundyingcitythattheysawfromafar,andthedesireofeverlastinglife,toescapefromdeathandtheendingofdelight,grewstronguponthem;andeverastheirpowerandglorygrewgreatertheirunquietincreased.ForthoughtheValarhadrewardedtheDunedainwithlonglife,theycouldnottakefromthemthewearinessoftheworldthatcomesatlast,andtheydied,eventheirkingsoftheseedofEarendil;andthespanoftheirliveswasbriefintheeyesoftheEldar.Thusitwasthatashadowfelluponthem:inwhichmaybethewillofMorgothwasatworkthatstillmovedintheworld.AndtheNumenoreansbegantomurmur,atfirstintheirhearts,andtheninopenwords,againstthedoomofMen,andmostofallagainsttheBanwhichforbadethemtosailintotheWest.
Andtheysaidamongthemselves:’WhydotheLordsoftheWestsitthereinpeaceunending,whilewemustdieandgoweknownotwhither,leavingourhomeandallthatwehavemade?AndtheEldardienot,eventhosethatrebelledagainsttheLords.
