LongdidDiorgazeupontheSilmaril,whichhisfatherandmotherhadbroughtbeyondhopeoutoftheterrorofMorgoth;andhisgriefwasgreatthatdeathhadcomeuponthemsosoon.ButthewisehavesaidthattheSilmarilhastenedtheirend;fortheflameofthebeautyofLuthienassheworeitwastoobrightformortallands.
ThenDiorarose,andabouthisneckheclaspedtheNauglamir;andnowheappearedasthefairestofallthechildrenoftheworld,ofthreefoldrace:oftheEdain,andoftheEldar,andoftheMaiaroftheBlessedRealm.
ButnowtherumourranamongthescatteredElvesofBeleriandthatDiorThingol’sheirworetheNauglamir,andtheysaid:’ASilmarilofFeanorburnsagaininthewoodsofDoriath’;andtheoathofthesonsofFeanorwaswakedagainfromsleep.ForwhileLuthienworetheNecklaceoftheDwarvesnoElfwoulddaretoassailher;butnowhearingoftherenewalofDoriathandofDior’spridethesevengatheredagainfromwandering,andtheysenttohimtoclaimtheirown.
ButDiorreturnednoanswertothesonsofFeanor;andCelegormstirreduphisbrotherstoprepareanassaultuponDoriath.Theycameatunawaresinthemiddleofwinter,andfoughtwithDiorintheThousandCaves;andsobefellthesecondslayingofElfbyElf
