ThesetidingscamesoontoBerenandLuthien;andinthattimealsoamessengercametothemoutofDoriathtellingofwhathadbefallenthere.ThenBerenaroseandleftTolGalen,andsummoningtohimDiorhissontheywentnorthtotheRiverAscar;andwiththemwentmanyoftheGreen-elvesofOssiriand.
Thusitcameto.passthatwhentheDwarvesofNogrod,returningfromMenegrothwithdiminishedhost,cameagaintoSarnAthrad,theywereassailedbyunseenenemies;forastheyclimbedupGelion’sbanksburdenedwiththespoilsofDoriath,suddenlyallthewoodswerefilledwiththesoundofelven-horns,andshaftsspeduponthemfromeveryside.ThereverymanyoftheDwarveswereslaininthefirstonset;butsomeescapingfromtheambushheldtogether,andfledeastwardstowardsthemountains.AndastheyclimbedthelongslopesbeneathMountDolmedtherecameforththeShepherdsoftheTrees,andtheydrovetheDwarvesintotheshadowywoodsofEredLindon:whence,itissaid,cameneveronetoclimbthehighpassesthatledtotheirhomes.
InthatbattlebySarnAthradBerenfoughthislastfight,andhimselfslewtheLordofNogrod,andwrestedfromhimtheNecklaceoftheDwarves;buthedyinglaidhiscurseuponallthetreasure.ThenBerengazedinwonderontheselfsamejewelofFeanorthathehadcutfromMorgoth’sironcrown,nowshiningsetamidgoldandgemsbythecunningoftheDwarves;andhewasheditcleanofbloodinthewatersoftheriver.
