Thenhewrenchedoutthesword,butaspoutofblackbloodfollowedit,andfellonhishand,andthevenomburnedit.AndthereuponGlaurungopenedhiseyesandlookeduponTurambarwithsuchmalicethatitsmotehimasablow;andbythatstrokeandtheanguishofthevenomhefellintoadarkswoon,andlayasonedead,andhisswordwasbeneathhim.
ThescreamsofGlaurungranginthewoods,andcametothepeoplethatwaitedatNenGirith;andwhenthosethatlookedforthheardthem,andsawafartheruinandburningthatthedragonmade,theydeemedthathehadtriumphedandwasdestroyingthosethatassailedhim.AndNinielsatandshudderedbesidethefallingwater,andatthevoiceofGlaurungherdarknesscreptuponheragain,sothatshecouldnotstirfromthatplaceofherownwill.
EvensoBrandirfoundher,forhecametoNenGirithatlast,limpingwearily;andwhenheheardthatthedragonhadcrossedtheriverandhadbeatendownhisfoes,hisheartyearnedtowardsNinielinpity.
