NowthephalanxoftheguardoftheKingbrokethroughtheranksoftheOrcs,andTurgonhewedhiswaytothesideofhisbrother;anditistoldthatthemeetingofTurgonwithHurin,whostoodbesideFingon,wasgladinthemidstofbattle.ThenhopewasrenewedintheheartsoftheElves;andinthatverytime,atthethirdhourofmorning,thetrumpetsofMaedhroswereheardatlastcomingupfromtheeast,andthebannersofthesonsofFeanorassailedtheenemyintherear.SomehavesaidthateventhentheEldarmighthavewontheday,hadalltheirhostsprovedfaithful;fortheOrcswavered,andtheironslaughtwasstayed,andalreadysomewereturningtoflight.ButevenasthevanguardofMaedhroscameupontheOrcs,Morgothloosedhislaststrength,andAngbandwasemptied.Therecamewolves,andwolfriders,andtherecameBalrogs,anddragons,andGlaurungfatherofdragons.ThestrengthandterroroftheGreatWormwerenowgreatindeed,andElvesandMenwitheredbeforehim;andhecamebetweenthehostsofMaedhrosandFingonandsweptthemapart.
Yetneitherbywolf,norbyBalrog,norbyDragon,wouldMorgothhaveachievedhisend,butforthetreacheryofMen.
