ItcamethenintoBeren’smindthathewouldgobeyondhisvow,andbearoutofAngbandallthreeoftheJewelsofFeanor;butsuchwasnotthedoomoftheSilmarils.TheknifeAngristsnapped,andashardofthebladeflyingsmotethecheekofMorgoth.Hegroanedandstirred,andallthehostofAngbandmovedinsleep.
ThenterrorfelluponBerenandLuthien,andtheyfled,heedlessandwithoutdisguise,desiringonlytoseethelightoncemore.Theywereneitherhinderednorpursued,buttheGatewasheldagainsttheirgoingout;forCarcharothhadarisenfromsleep,andstoodnowinwrathuponthethresholdofAngband.Beforetheywereawareofhim,hesawthem,andspranguponthemastheyran.
Luthienwasspent,andshehadnottimenorstrengthtoquellthewolf.ButBerenstrodeforthbeforeher,andinhisrighthandheheldalofttheSilmaril.Carcharothhalted,andforamomentwasafraid.’Getyougone,andfly!’criedBeren;’forhereisafirethatshallconsumeyou,andallevilthings.’AndhethrusttheSilmarilbeforetheeyesofthewolf.
ButCarcharothlookeduponthatholyjewelandwasnotdaunted,andthedevouringspiritwithinhimawoketosuddenfire;andgapinghetooksuddenlythehandwithinhisjaws,andhebititoffatthewrist.Thenswiftlyallhisinwardswerefilledwithaflameofanguish,andtheSilmarilsearedhisaccursedflesh.Howlingheledbeforethem,andthewallsofthevalleyoftheGateechoeswiththeclamourofhistorment.
