ItistoldthatevenasVardaendedherlabours,andtheywerelong,whenfirstMenelmacarstrodeuptheskyandthebluefireofHelluinflickeredinthemistsabovethebordersoftheworld,inthathourtheChildrenoftheEarthawoke,theFirstbornofIluvatar.BythestarlitmereofCuivienen,WaterofAwakening,theyrosefromthesleepofIluvatar;andwhiletheydweltyetsilentbyCuivienentheireyesbeheldfirstofallthingsthestarsofheaven.Thereforetheyhaveeverlovedthestarlight,andhavereveredVardaElentariabovealltheValar.
Inthechangesoftheworldtheshapesoflandsandofseashavebeenbrokenandremade;rivershavenotkepttheircourses,neitherhavemountainsremainedsteadfast;andtoCuivienenthereisnoreturning.ButitissaidamongtheElvesthatitlayfaroffintheeastofMiddle-earth,andnorthward,anditwasabayintheInlandSeaofHelcar;andthatseastoodwhereaforetimetherootsofthemountainofIlluinhadbeenbeforeMelkoroverthrewitManywatersfloweddownthitherfromheightsintheeast,andthefirstsoundthatwasheardbytheElveswasthesoundofwaterflowing,andthesoundofwaterfallingoverstone.
