ThenLuthien,perceivingthatnohelpwouldcomefromanyotheronearth,resolvedtoflyfromDoriathandcomeherselftohim;butshesoughttheaidofDaeron,andhebetrayedherpurposebecausehewouldnotdepriveLuthienofthelightsofheaven,lestshefailandfade,andyetwouldrestrainher,hecausedahousetobebuiltfromwhichsheshouldnotescape.NotfarfromthegatesofMenegrothstoodthegreatestofallthetreesintheForestofNeldoreth;andthatwasabeech-forestandthenorthernhalfofthekingdom.ThismightybeechwasnamedHirilorn,andithadthreetrunks,equalingirth,smoothinrind,andexceedingtall;nobranchesgrewfromthemforagreatheightabovetheground.FaraloftbetweentheshaftsofHirilornawoodenhousewasbuilt,andthereLuthienwasmadetodwell;andladdersweretakenawayandguarded,saveonlywhentheservantsofThingolwroughthersuchthingsassheneeded.
ItistoldintheLayofLeithianhowsheescapedfromthehouseinHirilorn;forsheputforthherartsofenchantment,andcausedherhairtogrowtogreatlength,andofitshewoveadarkrobethatwrappedherbeautylikeashadow,anditwasladenwithaspellofsleep.Ofthestrandsthatremainedshetwinedarope,andsheletitdownfromherwindow;andastheendswayedabovetheguardsthatsatbeneaththehousetheyfellintoadeepslumber.ThenLuthienclimbedfromherprison,andshroudedinhershadowycloaksheescapedfromalleyes,andvanishedoutofDoriath.
