ThenthespellofsilencefellfromBeren,andhecalledtoher,cryingTinuviel;andthewoodsechoedthename.Thenshehaltedinwonder,andflednomore,andBerencametoher.Butasshelookedonhim,doomfelluponher,andshelovedhim;yetsheslippedfromhisarmsandvanishedfromhissightevenasthedaywasbreaking.ThenBerenlayuponthegroundinaswoon,asoneslainatoncebyblissandgrief;andhefellintoasleepasitwereintoanabyssofshadow,andwakinghewascoldasstone,andhisheartbarrenandforsaken.Andwanderinginmindhegropedasonethatisstrickenwithsuddenblindness,andseekswithhandstograspthevanishedlight.Thushebeganthepaymentofanguishforthefatethatwaslaidonhim;andinhisfateLuthienwascaught,andbeingimmortalshesharedinhismortality,andbeingfreereceivedhischain;andheranguishwasgreaterthananyotheroftheEldaliehasknown.
Beyondhishopeshereturnedtohimwherehesatindarkness,andlongagointheHiddenKingdomshelaidherhandinhis.
