RumourcametoMorgothofthesethings,andhewasunquietamidhisvictories;andhedesiredgreatlytolearntidingsofFelagundandTurgon.Fortheyhadvanishedoutofknowledge,andyetwerenotdead;andhefearedwhattheymightyetaccomplishagainsthim.OfNargothrondheknewindeedthename,butneitheritsplacenoritsstrength;andofGondolinheknewnothing,andthethoughtofTurgontroubledhimthemore.ThereforehesentforthevermorespiesintoBeleriand;butherecalledthemainhostsoftheOrcstoAngband,forheperceivedthathecouldnotyetmakeafinalandvictoriousbattleuntilhehadgatherednewstrength,andthathehadnotmeasuredrightlythevalouroftheNoldornorthemightinarmsoftheMenthatfoughtbesidethem.GreatthoughhisvictoryhadbeenintheBragollachandintheyearsafter,andgrievoustheharmthathehaddonetohisenemies,hisownlosshadbeennoless;andthoughheheldDorthonionandthePassofSirion,theEldarrecoveringfromtheirfirstdismaybegannowtoregainwhattheyhadlost.
