ForTurgontookgreatlikingforthesonsofGaldor,andspokemuchwiththem;andhewishedindeedtokeeptheminGondolinoutoflove,andnotonlyforhislawthatnostranger,beheElforMan,whofoundthewaytothesecretkingdomandlookeduponthecityshouldeverdepartagain,untiltheKingshouldopentheleaguer,andthehiddenpeopleshouldcomeforth.
ButHurinandHuordesiredtoreturntotheirownpeopleandshareinthewarsandgriefsthatnowbesetthem.
AndHurinsaidtoTurgon:"Lord,wearebutmortalMen,andunliketheEldar.Theymayendureforlongyearsawaitingbattlewiththeirenemiesinsomefardistantday;butforusthetimeisshort,andourhopeandstrengthsoonwither.MoreoverwedidnotfindtheroadtoGondolin,andindeedwedonotknowsurelywherethiscitystands;forwewerebroughtinfearandwonderbythehighwaysoftheair,andinmercyoureyeswereveiled.’ThenTurgongrantedhisprayer,andhesaid:’Bythewaythatyoucameyouhaveleavetodepart,ifThorondoriswilling.Igrieveatthisparting;yetinalittlewhile,astheEldaraccountit,wemaymeetagain.’
ButMaeglin,theKing’ssister-son,whowasmightyinGondolin,grievednotatallattheirgoing,thoughhebegrudgedthemthefavouroftheKing,forhehadnoloveforanyofthekindredofMen;andhesaidtoHurin:’TheKing’sgraceisgreaterthanyouknow,andthelawisbecomelessstemthanaforetime;orelsenochoicewouldbegivenyoubuttoabideheretoyourlife’send.’
