TheyearsoftheEdainwerelengthened,accordingtothereckoningofMen,aftertheircomingtoBeleriand;butatlastBeortheOlddiedwhenhehadlivedthreeandninetyyears,forfourandfortyofwhichhehadservedKingFelagund.Andwhenhelaydead,ofnowoundorgrief,butstrickenbyage,theEldarsawforthefirsttimetheswiftwaningofthelifeofMen,andthedeathofwearinesswhichtheyknewnotinthemselves;andtheygrievedgreatlyforthelossoftheirfriends.ButBeoratthelasthadrelinquishedhislifewillinglyandpassedinpeace;andtheEldarwonderedmuchatthestrangefateofMen,forinalltheirloretherewasnoaccountofit,anditsendwashiddenfromthem
