Yetbecausethouhiddestthisthoughtfrommeuntilitsachievement,thychildrenwillhavelittleloveforthethingsofmylove.Theywilllovefirstthethingsmadebytheirownhands,asdoththeirfather.Theywilldelveintheearth,andthethingsthatgrowandliveupontheearththeywillnotheed.Manyatreeshallfeelthebiteoftheirironwithoutpity.’
ButAuleanswered:’ThatshallalsobetrueoftheChildrenofIluvatar;fortheywilleatandtheywillbuild.Andthoughthethingsofthyrealmhaveworthinthemselves,andwouldhaveworthifnoChildrenweretocome,yetEruwillgivethemdominion,andtheyshalluseallthattheyfindinArda:thoughnot,bythepurposeofEru,withoutrespectorwithoutgratitude.’
’NotunlessMelkordarkentheirhearts,’saidYavanna.Andshewasnotappeased,butgrievedinheart,fearingwhatmightbedoneuponMiddle-earthindaystocome.ThereforeshewentbeforeManwe,andshedidnotbetraythecounselofAule,butshesaid:’KingofArda,isittrue,asAulehathsaidtome,thattheChildrenwhentheycomeshallhavedominionoverallthethingsofmylabour,todoastheywilltherewith?’

ThenYavannawassilentandlookedintoherownthought.Andsheanswered:’Becausemyheartisanxious,thinkingofthedaystocome.Allmyworksaredeartome.IsitnotenoughthatMelkorshouldhavemarredsomany?
