Certainitiswhencetheycame,andtheeviltruthwasenhancedandpoisonedbylies;buttheSindarwereyetunwaryandtrustfulofwords,and(asmaywellbethought)Morgothchosethemforthisfirstassaultofhismalice,fortheyknewhimnot.AndCirdan,hearingthesedarktales,wastroubled;forhewaswise,andperceivedswiftlythattrueorfalsetheywereputaboutatthistimethroughmalice,thoughthemalicehedeemedwasthatoftheprincesoftheNoldor,becauseofthejealousyoftheirhouses.ThereforehesentmessengerstoThingoltotellallthathehadheard.
ItchancedthatatthattimethesonsofFinarfinwereagaintheguestsofThingol,fortheywishedtoseetheirsisterGaladriel.ThenThingol,beinggreatlymoved,spokeinangertoFinrod,saying:’Illhaveyoudonetome,kinsman,toconcealsogreatmattersfromme.FornowIhavelearnedofalltheevildeedsoftheNoldor.’
ButFinrodanswered:’WhatillhaveIdoneyon,lord?OrwhatevildeedhavetheNoldordoneinallyourrealmtogrieveyou?Neitheragainstyourkinshipnoragainstanyofyourpeoplehavetheythoughtevilordoneevil.’
’Imarvelatyou,sonofEarwen,’saidThingol,’thatyouwouldcometotheboardofyourkinsmanthusredhandedfromtheslayingofyourmotherskin,andyetsaynaughtindefence,noryetseekanypardon!’
ThenFinrodwasgreatlytroubled,buthewassilent,forhecouldnotdefendhimself,savebybringingchargesagainsttheotherprincesoftheNoldor;andthathewasloathtodobeforeThingol.
