AtMerethAderthadmanycounselsweretakeningoodwill,andoathswereswornofleagueandfriendship;anditistoldthatatthisfeastthetongueoftheGrey-elveswasmostspokenevenbytheNoldor,fortheylearnedswiftlythespeechofBeleriand,whereastheSindarwereslowtomasterthetongueofValinor.TheheartsoftheNoldorwerehighandfullofhope,andtomanyamongthemitseemedthatthewordsofFeanorhadbeenJustified,biddingthemseekfreedomandfairkingdomsinMiddle-earth;andindeedtherefollowedafterlongyearsofpeace,whiletheirswordsfencedBeleriandfromtheruinofMorgoth,andhispowerwasshutbehindhisgates.InthosedaystherewasjoybeneaththenewSunandMoon,andallthelandwasglad;butstilltheShadowbroodedinthenorth.
Andwhenagainthirtyyearshadpassed,TurgonsonofFingolfinleftNevrastwherehedweltandsoughtoutFinrodhisfriendupontheislandofTolSirion,andtheyjourneyedsouthwardalongtheriver,beingwearyforawhileofthenorthernmountains;andastheyjourneyednightcameuponthembeyondtheMeresofTwilightbesidethewatersofSirion,andtheysleptuponhisbanksbeneaththesummerstars.ButUlmocominguptheriverlaidadeepsleepuponthemandheavydreams;andthetroubleofthedreamsremainedaftertheyawoke,butneithersaidaughttotheother,fortheirmemorywasnotclear,andeachbelievedthatUlmohadsentamessagetohimalone.
