           Thisfertileandshelteredtractofcountry,inwhichthefieldsareneverbrownandthespringsneverdry,isboundedonthesouthbytheboldchalkridgethatembracestheprominencesofHambledonHill,Bulbarrow,Nettlecombe-Tout,Dogbury,HighStoy,andBubbDown.Thetravellerfromthecoast,who,afterploddingnorthwardforascoreofmilesovercalcareousdownsandcorn-lands,suddenlyreachesthevergeofoneoftheseescarpments,issurprisedanddelightedtobehold,extendedlikeamapbeneathhim,acountrydifferingabsolutelyfromthatwhichhehaspassedthrough.Behindhimthehillsareopen,thesunblazesdownuponfieldssolargeastogiveanunenclosedcharactertothelandscape,thelanesarewhite,thehedgeslowandplashed,theatmospherecolourless.
