           Theappealdulyfounditswaytothebreakfast-tableofthequietVicaragetothewestward,inthatvalleywheretheairissosoftandthesoilsorichthattheeffortofgrowthrequiresbutsuperficialaidbycomparisonwiththetillageatFlintcomb-Ash,andwheretoTessthehumanworldseemedsodifferent(thoughitwasmuchthesame).ItwaspurelyforsecuritythatshehadbeenrequestedbyAngeltosendhercommunicationsthroughhisfather,whomhekeptprettywellinformedofhischangingaddressesinthecountryhehadgonetoexploitforhimselfwithaheavyheart.
