           Tesspostponedherargumentsonthishighprojecttillshehadgrappledwithpressingmattersinhand,whichseemedlittleimprovedbyherremittances.Whenindoornecessitieshadbeeneasedsheturnedherattentiontoexternalthings.Itwasnowtheseasonforplantingandsowing;manygardensandallotmentsofthevillagershadalreadyreceivedtheirspringtillage;butthegardenandtheallotmentoftheDurbeyfieldswerebehindhand.Shefound,toherdismay,thatthiswasowingtotheirhavingeatenalltheseedpotatoes,thatlastlapseoftheimprovident.Attheearliestmomentsheobtainedwhatothersshecouldprocure,andinafewdaysherfatherwaswellenoughtoseetothegarden,underTess’spersuasiveefforts:whilesheherselfundertooktheallotment-plotwhichtheyrentedinafieldacoupleofhundredyardsoutofthevillage.
