Ontheoccasionofthisdomesticlittleparty,Ididnotrepeatmyformerextensivepreparations.Imerelyprovidedapairofsoles,asmalllegofmutton,andapigeon-pie.Mrs.Cruppbrokeoutintorebelliononmyfirstbashfulhintinreferencetothecookingofthefishandjoint,andsaid,withadignifiedsenseofinjury,‘No!No,sir!Youwillnotaskmesichathing,foryouarebetteracquaintedwithmethantosupposemecapableofdoingwhatIcannotdowithampialsatisfactiontomyownfeelings!’But,intheend,acompromisewaseffected;andMrs.Cruppconsentedtoachievethisfeat,onconditionthatIdinedfromhomeforafortnightafterwards.
