Ineverexpectedanythingless,thanthisunfortunate’smannerofgettingmeoutofmydifficulty.HestoleDora’swatch,which,likeeverythingelsebelongingtous,hadnoparticularplaceofitsown;and,convertingitintomoney,spenttheproduce(hewasalwaysaweak-mindedboy)inincessantlyridingupanddownbetweenLondonandUxbridgeoutsidethecoach.HewastakentoBowStreet,aswellasIremember,onthecompletionofhisfifteenthjourney;whenfour-and-sixpence,andasecond-handfifewhichhecouldn’tplay,werefounduponhisperson.
Thesurpriseanditsconsequenceswouldhavebeenmuchlessdisagreeabletomeifhehadnotbeenpenitent.Buthewasverypenitentindeed,andinapeculiarway—notinthelump,butbyinstalments.
