           Afterhehadfinishedcheckingoverthesaladshisunderstudyhadmadeandpeekedinonthehome-bakedbeanstheywereusingasappetizersthisweek,Hallorannuntiedhisapron,hungitonahook,andslippedoutthebackdoor.Hehadmaybeforty-fiveminutesbeforehehadtocrankupfordinnerinearnest.

           ThenameofthisplacewastheRedArrowLodge,anditwasburiedinthewesternMainemountains,thirtymilesfromthetownofRangely.Itwasagoodgig,Hallorannthought.Thetradewasn’ttooheavy,ittippedwell,andsofartherehadn’tbeenasinglemealsentback.Notbadatall,consideringtheseasonwasnearlyhalfover.

           Hethreadedhiswaybetweentheoutdoorbarandtheswimmingpool(althoughwhyanyonewouldwanttousethepoolwiththelakesohandyhewouldneverknow),crossedagreenswardwhereapartyoffourwasplayingcroquetandlaughing,andcrestedamildridge.Pinestookoverhere,andthewindsoughedpleasantlyinthem,carryingthearomaoffirandsweetresin.
