           Helayinbedmotionlessly,lookingupatthewind-stirredshadowsoftheleavesonhisbedroomceiling.Theytwinedsinuouslytogether,makingshapeslikethevinesandcreepersinajungle,likepatternswovenintothenapofathickcarpet.HewascladinDoctorDentonpajamas,butbetweenthepajamasuitandhisskinhehadgrownamorecloselyfittingsingletofperspiration.

           HeslippedoutofbedandpaddedsilentlyacrosstothewindowandlookedoutonArapahoeStreet,nowstillandsilent.Itwastwointhemorning.Therewasnothingouttherebutemptysidewalksdriftedwithfallenleaves,parkedcars,andthelong-neckedstreetlightonthecorneracrossfromtheCliffBricegasstation.Withitshoodedtopandmotionlessstance,thestreetlightlookedlikeamonsterinaspaceshow.

           Helookedupthestreetbothways,straininghiseyesforTony’sslight,beckoningform,buttherewasnoonethere.

           Thewindsighedthroughthetrees,andthefallenleavesrattledupthedesertedwalksandaroundthehubcapsofparkedcars.
