           HeshruggedandWendysawDanny’spaternityinthegesture;Jackcouldhardlyhavedoneitbetterhimself.ShewouldgetnomoreoutofDanny.Shefeltstrongexasperationmixedwithanevenstrongerlove:thelovewashelpless,theexasperationcamefromafeelingthatshewasdeliberatelybeingexcluded.Withthetwoofthemaroundshesometimesfeltlikeanoutsider,abitplayerwhohadaccidentallywanderedbackonstagewhilethemainactionwastakingplace.Well,theywouldn’tbeabletoexcludeherthiswinter,hertwoexasperatingmales;quartersweregoingtobealittletoocloseforthat.Shesuddenlyrealizedshewasfeelingjealousoftheclosenessbetweenherhusbandandherson,andfeltashamed.Thatwastooclosetothewayherownmothermighthavefelt…toocloseforcomfort.

           ThelobbywasnowemptyexceptforUllmanandtheheaddeskclerk(theywereattheregister,cashingup),acoupleofmaidswhohadchangedtowarmslacksandsweaters,standingbythefrontdoorandlookingoutwiththeirluggagepooledaroundthem,andWatson,themaintenanceman.Hecaughtherlookingathimandgaveherawink…adecidedlylecherousone.Shelookedawayhurriedly.Jackwasoverbythewindowjustoutsidetherestaurant,studyingtheview.Helookedraptanddreamy.
