Hisbootswereinthebootboxandhepulledthemon,histonguecreepingoutintothecornerofhismouthinconcentrationashelacedthemandtiedtherawhideintocarefulgrannyknots.Hepulledonhismittensandhisskimaskandwasready.
Hetrampedoutthroughthekitchentothebackdoor,thenpaused.Hewastiredofplayingoutback,andatthistimeofdaythehotel’sshadowwouldbecastoverhisplayarea.Hedidn’tevenlikebeingintheOverlook’sshadow.Hedecidedbewouldputonhissnowshoesandgodowntotheplaygroundinstead.DickHallorannhadtoldhimtostayawayfromthetopiary,butthethoughtofthehedgeanimalsdidnotbotherhimmuch.Theywereburiedundersnowdriftsnow,nothingshowingbutavaguehumpthatwastherabbit’sheadandthelions’tails.Stickingoutofthesnowthewaytheywere,thetailslookedmoreabsurdthanfrightening.
Dannyopenedthebackdoorandgothissnowshoesfromthemilkplatform.Fiveminuteslaterhewasstrappingthemtohisfeetonthefrontporch.Hisdaddyhadtoldhimthathe(Danny)hadthehangofusingthesnowshoes-thelazy,shufflingstride,thetwistofanklethatshookthepowderysnowfromthelacingsjustbeforethebootcamebackdown-andallthatremainedwasforhimtobuildupthenecessarymusclesinhisthighsandcalvesandankles.Dannyfounditathisanklesgottiredthefastest.Snowshoeingwasalmostashardonyouranklesasskating,becauseyouhadtokeepclearingthelacings.
